Kelly Richmond Pope grew up in a family of academics and knew early on she wanted to follow in her parents' footsteps. A high school accounting class sparked her interest in the field, and she eventually received her doctorate in accounting from Virginia Tech, where she began her teaching career. She is also a certified public accountant and spent many years in the forensic accounting practice at KPMG.

Pope is a professor of accountancy at DePaul University's Driehaus College of Business in Chicago. She is an expert on fraud and ethics. Her research led to producing and directing the award-winning documentary All the Queen's Horses, which explores the biggest municipal fraud case in U.S. history.
