Andy Flynn wasn't supposed to be a regular character, according to Tony Denison

  Warner Bros.

Tony Denison loved his character's relationship with Sharon Raydor, but imagine if viewers never got to see it. According to the actor, Andy Flynn wasn't initially a regular character. Producers wrote him into The Closer's pilot, and that was just about it.

"Well, actually Flynn was not supposed to be a regular character. Flynn was only supposed to be a guest star in the pilot. I wasn’t right for some of the other roles, so James Duff, whom I’ve known for 15 years said, 'I don’t know what to tell you. I’d love to have you on the show! There’s a character named Flynn, and right now he’s just going to be in the pilot. We’ll try to make him a recurring, but I can’t promise you anything,'” he said to Smashing Interviews Magazine in 2011.

"So, I did the pilot and the network so liked what I did that they made the character recurring. I wound up doing 9 of the 12 episodes the first year. They were like, 'We’ve got to have this guy on more.' So they made me a regular. "

Detective Lieutenant Andy Flynn faced issues on The Closer and Major Crimes that made him relatable to viewers. He wasn't perfect, but he was a good friend to Lt. Louie Provenza and a great significant other to Sharon Raydor.

We're glad the network recognized how much Denison's character brought to The Closer and, eventually, its spinoff, Major Crimes. Andy and Louie are one of our favorite on-screen best friends.
