Kyra Sedgwick on her character and Sharon Raydor: ''It’s nice for Brenda to have an antagonist that’s a woman.''

We see it all the time on television.

The woman main character has a male antagonist who is usually sexist and big-headed, calling her out on mistakes in front of the whole squad. He gets cool points with the other guys and thinks she secretly has "the hots" for him. Things were different on The Closer, though. Brenda Leigh Johnson's antagonist was Sharon Raydor, another woman whose thought process was totally different from hers.

Played by Kyra Sedgwick, the actress thought her character and Raydor (played by Mary McDonnell) were good for the show. In a 2009 interview with Oprah.com, Sedgwick discussed the upcoming season of the crime drama.

"We always have a theme. And this year’s theme is change. Firstly, there’s a change in the squad. And you know, Brenda’s not a huge fan of change...most of us aren’t. And I think it’s challenging for her at every turn," she began, after being asked for a scoop of the new season. "So, the other obvious change is that she’s married, and that’ll be new and different and have its challenges. Chief Pope does a tour of duty with our squad, and he gets involved in one of Flynn and Provenza’s classic screwups in the process. It’s pretty funny. And you know, Fritz and Brenda [are struggling with] the decision about whether or not to have children."

Next, she shared that a well-known actress was coming in to shake things up a bit. "Mary McDonnell’s coming in for a couple of episodes as an internal affairs officer who is my opposite in every way, and so that’s been amazing. She’s really, she’s a great actress, and it’s nice for Brenda to have an antagonist that’s a woman."
