Veronica Mars got a new look in season three, and here's why it happened

When a show begins with the star or supporting characters in high school, if the series continues, it will next show them in college or figuring out adulthood. It's about the characters evolving; they can't stay the same because storylines will run out.

Development and growth are expected when watching a series, especially a show like Veronica Mars. When Kristen Bell took the role, she was in her early twenties playing a 17-year-old private investigator. In the first season, her style was tough like her mentality as she figured out who murdered her best friend, Lilly. In season two, Mars is still in high school with the same choppy cut, just a bit longer, but now she solves multiple crimes, a new one each episode.

As viewers watched the show, her style changed. In season three, Mars' hair is longer and she's less punky. Bell explained why this happened.

"It's simply that she doesn't feel the need to spike her hair up and wear so much black leather and stuff that's tough," Bell told the Associated Press in 2006. "A lot of kids dress to conceal themselves a little bit... Veronica dressed really tough because she felt hurt and vulnerable and dressed to combat that. But now I think she's sort of accepting who she is; she's no longer feeling the need to be so punky."
