Hated or Loved? Unpacking why many ''The Closer'' fans wanted Brenda to stay away from Will Pope
Posted: January 7, 2025, 9:19AMHate is such a strong word, but it's the best way to describe The Closer's audience's feelings toward Will Pope. Some viewers out there love this character and his many flaws (kudos to you all for sticking with your favorite character through thick and thin.)
Yet, the majority wanted him and his antics to stay FAR away from Brenda Leigh Johnson. We see both sides of this love/hate thing for Pope. Let's take a look at this character played by J.K. Simmons.
Occupation: Assistant Chief for Operations of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)
Relationship status: Cheater. Ahem, uh, we mean single. He was married twice and cheated on his first wife with Johnson. Then, he broke up with Johnson and married another woman, who ended up divorcing him (it's a mess.)
How does he feel about Brenda? He brings her in to do a job but always wants to bother her when she does it. At times, it seems like he still has feelings for Johnson, and you can see him act a bit jealous of her relationship with Fritz Howard.
What's his personality? Pope is all about playing the long game. He's like a coin; each side is different, and he uses that as an advantage to excel in his career. He commands respect and can be overly controlling.
Looking at this little snapshot into the character, we've unpacked why the majority of The Closer's audience hated him. He wasn't above throwing anyone under the bus to save himself, although he was mainly protective when it came to Johnson.
